The mission of the SAMA Foundation is to eliminate the disease of substance addiction in youth by advancing research, education and treatment. Our vision is that young people and their families find the resources they need to overcome the disease of substance addiction.
Description:
SAMA is a privately funded nonprofit organization based in Seattle, WA with the goal of improving the management as well as the science of substance addition. Recognizing the gap in services for adolescents, SAMA's primary goals are to improve early detection and treatment of substance addiction and to expand resources for the families of drug-addicted teens. Through helping and empowering parents to recognize substance abuse early and assist in its treatment as soon as it is recognized, SAMA hopes to help teenagers avoid the disabling physical, emotional and behavioral effects of substance addiction.
History:
Seattle leaders Dr. Robert Day and Cynthia "CJ" Taylor Day started SAMA after years of struggling to find effective treatment for their drug-addicted teenage daughter. SAMA was formally established in mid-summer 2006. SAMA will accomplish its mission by supporting research on the science and management of addictions, assuring availability of effective substance abuse prevention and treatment services, providing information about substance abuse treatments, and advocating for research and treatment of substance addiction.
