NAMI is dedicated to the eradication of mental illnesses and to the improvement of the quality of life of all whose lives are affected by these diseases
Description:
Our goal is to enable each individual with a mental illness (children, adolescents, or adults) to live the best life possible. Most of us have a relative or friend that has a mental illness, or we are living with one ourselves. We offer mutual support to one another. We educate ourselves and the public, promote better treatment and support services, and advocate for research into the causes and treatment of these illnesses.
History:
Founded in 1979, NAMI works to achieve equitable services and treatment for more than 15 million Americans living with severe mental illnesses and their families. Hundreds of thousands of volunteers participate in more than 1200 local affiliates and fifty state organizations (also Puerto Rico and D.C.) to provide:Education and support, combat stigma, support increased funding for research, advocate for adequate health insurance, adequate housing, rehabilitation and jobs.
