Elizabeth Gregory Home serves women who are recovering from homelessness by providing transitional supportive housing and hospitality that will help them moved toward an enriched life within the community.

Description:
Elizabeth Gregory Home provides a safe place for women leaving shelters to find the support and guidance they need to get back on their feet. Hosting up to eleven women at a time, we offer 24-hour care and support services for six months to two years to prepare our guests to live independently and thus reduce their risk of returning to the streets. EGH runs a daytime drop-in center open to all homeless women residing on the streets or in emergency shelter. We are open 7 days a week. We provide laundry, hygiene, case management, mail, and internet access.

A professionally trained staff coordinates the program and manages the facility. We collaborate with other agencies to offer residents meals, health care, therapeutic counseling, spiritual enrichment, job training, money management, computer skills training, addiction recovery treatment, cooking and art classes, advocacy and referral services, follow-up, and networking support. Both the facility and the program are designed to meet the therapeutic needs of women in transition. Elizabeth Gregory Home functions as a household, with residents sharing the responsibilities and support of a community experience.

Prospective residents are interviewed and selected by a careful intake process that ensures that our guests are committed to setting goals, developing self-esteem, and breaking the cycle of homelessness. Elizabeth Gregory Home endeavors to be an important part of the community and a good neighbor to those around us.

History:
After a lengthy study of the most critical social needs in the University District, University Lutheran Church voted overwhelmingly to address housing for homeless women. On February 1, 2001, the congregation approved the concepts for transitional housing and voted to create a separate, non-profit board to oversee the establishment of Elizabeth Gregory Home. Non-profit incorporation was completed later that year. Elizabeth Gregory Home is a long-term investment in the women whom we will welcome; we hope it will serve as a model program that can be replicated at additional sites in the future.
