The mission of Interaction Transition (I/T) is to assist ex-offenders who are serious about making a successful transition from life in prison to life in the free community.
Description:
I/T is a small, private non-profit agency that helps its participants meet certain critical basic needs, such as housing, work and social support. In so doing, the program reduces the risk that participants will resume criminal activity and harm their fellow community members. In addition to providing participants with basic support during their transition, I/T promotes reconciliation with society through such means as the extensive use of community volunteers, who facilitate group meetings and help participants solve practical problems.
History:
Founded in 1967 by an ex-convict, Interaction Transition is a small, grassroots program that sponsors Transition House, an 18-bed transitional housing facility, as well as prison-based support groups for inmates awaiting release from four Washington correctional facilities. Men and women leave prison with $40 in their pocket and long, hard odds against building a productive life. Most lack family or other traditional support systems, are without jobs or job skills, and are at high risk for homelessness, future criminal behavior, and repeated incarceration. Transition House helps motivated men and women beat the odds and go straight through a structured residential environment that successfully fosters economic security, individual responsibility, self-respect, and respect for others.
