Habitat for Humanity Seattle/South King County
[ View Opportunities ]
Last updated on September 17, 2008

Habitat for Humanity of Seattle/South King County is dedicated to eliminating substandard housing by working with donors, volunteers, community organizations and home buyers to create decent, affordable housing for families in need and to make shelter a matter of conscience with people everywhere. Habitat for Humanity of Seattle/South King County is one of over 2500 affiliates worldwide committed to the idea that everyone deserves a simple, decent, healthy place to live on terms that they can afford to pay. We are a Christian, ecumenical-based, non-profit organization welcoming people of any faith or no faith to work with us or to purchase Habitat homes.

Description:
Habitat for Humanity of Seattle/South King County obtains properties from individuals, congregations and city and county agencies. Using donated materials, labor and money, homes are built by volunteers in partnership with the homeowner family, who is required to invest 500 "sweat equity" hours to construct their home, thus reducing costs, increasing pride of ownership, and teaching home maintenance skills. The families to whom Habitat sells homes have an income between 25 and 50% of the area's median income. This translates between $19,475 and $38,950 for a family of four in King County. This income level precludes these families from obtaining traditional mortgages, and therefore, lessens the chance for them to own their own home. HFH-SSKC sells the completed homes to families at cost, charging no profit and no interest. Mortgage payments, spread over 20-30 years, are scheduled so monthly payments are recycled through a revolving Fund for Humanity to build more houses. Home ownership has been the primary means whereby families in the United States have been able to secure a better future for themselves. In King County and around the world, Habitat for Humanity creates simple, decent, safe homes that low-income families can afford to buy. Habitat For Humanity relies on religious congregations, businesses, schools and civic groups and thousands of individuals of all faiths and interests to work in partnership with low-income families to keep building homes and strengthening communities. Through volunteer labor and donations of money and materials, as well as pro-bono professional support, Habitat builds homes with partner families in need of simple, decent shelter. There is always room within Habitat for additional supporters and advocates to join the community of generous citizens who share the cost of making Habitat a success.

History:
Habitat for Humanity is an international non-profit organization that builds homes in partnership with low-income families. Founded in 1976 by Linda and Millard Fuller, our vision is to eliminate poverty housing and homelessness from the world, and to make decent shelter a matter of conscience and action. A grass roots movement, Habitat for Humanity of Seattle/South King County (HFH-SSKC) is one of over 2,500 affiliates in the United States.
