Ballan Africa endeavors to improve the quality of life for the peoples of East Africa by promoting self-sufficiency and developing initiatives to improve the health, education and welfare of rural communities.
Ballan Africa was established in spring 2004 by Andrea Hickerson and Aser Ashkir, who met through their work helping East African refugees in Seattle, Washington. The creation of Ballan Africa is a result of their mutual concern for people living East Africa who continue to be challenged by war, famine, economic inequality and injustice.
Description:
Ballan Africa was established in spring 2004 by Andrea Hickerson and Aser Ashkir, who met through their work helping East African refugees in Seattle, Washington. The creation of Ballan Africa is a result of their mutual concern for people living East Africa who continue to be challenged by war, famine, economic inequality and injustice. Ballan Africa strongly believes that education plays a vital role in creating the social change needed to bring East Africa into a time of peace and prosperity. The word "Ballan" comes from the Somali word for agreement or promise. By raising money to build schools in East Africa, as well as collecting and purchasing the necessary school supplies, Ballan Africa recognizes and celebrates the promise of East Africa's children to change the world.
