Northwest Dollars for Scholars seeks to inspire and empower every student to achieve his or her educational and career potential. We are a network of 168 volunteer-managed, community-based scholarship programs (chapters) providing scholarships and college-planning support to students across Washington & Oregon. Our organization works with local volunteers to start new chapters and strengthen existing chapters.

Description:
Each year an estimated 8,000 Washington & Oregon students do not go to college simply because they cannot afford to. We believe that the ability of young people to reach their full potential should not be limited by a lack of financial resources. Therefore, Northwest Dollars for Scholars is working to build scholarship resources to help students achieve their educational goals. We help local communities create new scholarship programs and we support existing Dollars for Scholars chapters and affiliates by providing guidance, training, marketing and fundraising support, new ideas, and technical assistance. We also work to establish partnerships with other organizations to support the development of scholarships. In 2006, Dollars for Scholars chapters in Washington & Oregon raised over $5.6 million and awarded scholarships to over 2,300 students.

History:
The Dollars for Scholars movement began in 1958 in Fall River, Massachusetts when Dr. Irving Fradkin asked each member of his small community to donate $1 to help send local students to college. The idea caught on and has grown to include over 1,200 Dollars for Scholars chapters across the United States. All chapters operate under the umbrella of Scholarship America, the nation's largest private sector scholarship and educational support organization. The first chapter was developed in the Northwest in 1987. Today there are 168 chapters in Washington & Oregon raising approximately $5.6 million annually and providing scholarships to over 2,300 Washington & Oregon students.
