Girl Scouts Beyond Bars (GSBB) is a gender-specific prevention program that promotes resiliency among girls, ages 5-17, whose mothers are incarcerated. Currently, Girl Scouts of Western Washington serves girls in King and Pierce counties.
Description:
Through ongoing troop meetings, GSBB provides girls with a safe and consistent space to process some of their challenges with other girls and positive adults who have an understanding and acceptance of what it means to have a mother in prison. GSBB also strives to preserve and enhance the mother/daughter bond. For girls whose mothers are incarcerated, Girl Scouts help dissolve the prison walls and policies that separate a daughter from her most important female role model, while also providing her with the skills and support to persevere through the challenges that life may bring. GSBB proudly partners with the Washington State Department of Corrections to serve girls with mothers at WCCW in Purdy, WA, MCCCW in Belfair, WA, and PLCCW in Spokane, WA.
History:
As a step toward nurturing and maintaining parental bonds, the Girls Scouts Beyond Bars (GSBB) program was initiated by the National Institute of Justice in 1992. At this time, there are approximately 40 Beyond Bars programs in existence nationwide.
