Northwest Center's mission is to promote the growth, development and independence of persons with disabilities through programs of education, rehabilitation and work opportunity. In our Child Development Program (CDP), we provide an inclusive environment in which all families receive individualized programs of education, advocacy, therapy and family support that nurture the development of children with and without disabilities.
Description:
Northwest Center Child Development Program serves children ages birth to 12 with and without disabilities. Childcare, specialized services, therapies, health care, family support and nutrition are provided to all enrolled children, including those with developmental disabilities, diverse socio-economic backgrounds and cultural values. All services are provided within the context of an inclusive early childhood environment, and promote skill building and positive self-esteem, appropriate to the current and emerging developmental levels of each child. We provide a birth to three early intervention program, full day childcare, preschool and kindergarten readiness programs, as well as a school age out-of-school-time program. We value each child as a unique individual. At the CDP, children learn and play side by side where they are given the opportunities to reach their highest potential while developing positive attitudes towards all people.
History:
Northwest Center was founded in 1965 by families of children with disabilities and believed that every person had the right to pursue an education, training and employment. Their dream to build a program where people with special needs could reach their full potential, live productive lives, and contribute positively to the community has grown enormously since this beginning. Northwest Center was instrumental in advocacy and legislation, leading to the passage of current laws mandating inclusion in public education.
Today, Northwest Center is the largest and most comprehensive private organization providing services for people with disabilities in the Pacific Northwest, serving more than 500 children and adults every day.
The Child Development Program was founded as a school for children with disabilities who were not included in public schools. With the passage of progressive laws, the program shifted their focus to serving younger children in an early childhood setting. Today the program continues to innovate, adding our school age program to increase the ages we serve to age 12. This program provides before-and-after-school care to school age children in the community whose needs are not being met typical programs with higher ratios.
