Upon opening in Winter 2008, our program will provide temporary housing and social services for Seattle area families who have recently become homeless. While originating in faith communities, it is not a religious-based program and invites volunteer participation from the larger community. All who share a passion for families made homeless are invited to become involved.
Description:
Family Promise utilizes 10-15 area churches/synagogues for overnight housing and hospitality for a maximum of 14 persons at a time(maximum of 4 families). The churches host on a rotating basis, one week per quarter (approx.), providing a shared dinner, evening fellowship, and comfortable, safe sleeping accommodations. After a quick breakfast, guests are transported by the program van to the day center -- for social services, computer use, laundry, showers, kitchen facilities -- and a place to relax between work, appointments and other tasks.
Before this Seattle agency can begin working with clients, several things must happen: the day center at 3623 California Ave SW will be adapted from rental apartments to office and day use;a network director will be hired (for social services, day-to-day managing of the program). The14-passenger van for daily transporting of clients has been donated.
A special need in the near future: persons who can join our Board of Directors or assist the Board in its development, especially those with grant-writing and fund-raising skills. We currently have seven members of our "start-up" Board, new persons would be warmly welcomed! No connection with faith communities is necessary, just a passion for homeless families and interest in board participation.
History:
Family Promise Seattle grew out of a network of West Seattle churches that committed to working together on local hunger and homelessness issues and projects. We became an affiliate of the national program of the same name (formerly Interfaith Hospitality Network), which was formed in 1988 and now consists of over 125 affiliates across the U.S.
The national program, based in New Jersey, has provided several developers to assist us in congregation recruitment and fund-raising since June 2004. Excellent printed and internet resources are available to us.
Board members have been presenting the program to area churches since 2004; approximately 30 have now been visited (clergy, lay leaders), and 8-10 are actively working internally on becoming host congregations
(or supporting ones, providing volunteers, specific needs).
This program became a 501(c)(3) organization in July, 2005. Since then efforts have been directed toward Board training (UWKC, Nonprofit Assistance Center, etc.) and exploring funding sources.
