Eastside Legal Assistance Program
Last updated on January 10, 2008

Eastside Legal Assistance Program (ELAP)provides free civil legal services, primarily through volunteer attorneys, to low income residents of East and Northeast King County,

Description:
ELAP provides civil legal services (i.e. anything that is NOT a criminal matter) through a variety of projects, including 6 advice/consultation clinics (free 1/2 hour consultation), the Wills Project (free will, physician's directive, durable power of attorney), Self-Help Dissolution Workshop (assists those representing themselves in a dissolution), Domestic Violence Legal Fund (provides free emergency assistance to abuse victims anywhere in King County), educational lectures, Client Plus and full representation. We have 6 full and part time staff members, including 1 part time staff attorney for the DVLF. Most of our services are provided at other sites and we use primarily volunteer attorneys to provide services, as well as volunteers to oversee our advice clinics.

History:
ELAP was incorporated as a non-profit in 1989 and opened its doors to clients in mid-1990. Since that time it has continuously expanded its services to low income residents needing civil legal assistance. Over 2,000 people contact ELAP each year for assistance. ELAP's volunteer attorneys provide over $200,000 worth of donated services each year. The agency is funded by the Eastside cities, the Legal Foundation of Washington, special events and private donations.
