Do you enjoy maritime history and industry in the Puget Sound region? Do you want to share historic ships and their stories with people of all backgrounds? If yes, this is an exciting opportunity for you.
Northwest Seaport needs enthusiastic docents to guide tours of its tugboat Arthur Foss and help answer visitor questions at Seattleās Lake Union Park. No prior knowledge of maritime history is needed; a training course provides information about tugboats, tours, and teaching strategies.
The next training session starts Saturday, March 29 and continues on Saturdays until April 19. Each training day starts at ten AM and ends at four PM and includes lecture, discussion, visits to the historic vessels, and other educational opportunities. Lunches are provided to docent candidates during each session.
Potential docents must be interested in talking with visitors to the Arthur Foss and other vessels. The ideal docent candidate is friendly, interested, and eager to learn more about maritime heritage in the Puget Sound region to serve as a better interpreter for visitors.
Docent candidates are required to attend a four-session training course to prepare them to lead tours and answer visitor questions about the Arthur Foss and other historic vessels. The next training session begins on Saturday, March 29, 2008. Docent candidates are required to attend all training sessions and commit to leading at least one tour per month after completing the training course.
Please note that the Arthur Foss and Northwest Seaport's other vessels are not wheelchair accessible at the current time. Potential docents must be able to climb a short flight of stairs for the current tour structure.
