Opportunity: Campaign Researcher
Job goals:
- Gather information needed to further the campaign
- Organize that information to make it accessible and useable as needed
- Coordinate with others in the campaign
Background:
The Justice Works! strategic plan includes goals for specific issue campaigns and transition support. In order to successfully accomplish these goals, a unified statewide voice and presence must exist. The Visibility Project is based on the idea that all our campaigns require us to shed light on each issue as part of a larger movement for justice. And, that justice and humanity requires to also bring people who are affected by the criminal justice system into the public consciousness and conscience. All Justice Works! campaigns will have the same main title – and different subtitles. One of our campaigns calls for reform of the 3-Strikes law. This campaign will be used as an example below.
Summary of Major Duties:
PLANNING RESEARCH NEEDED
- Identify the types of information needed. Examples for the 3-Strikes Campaign include:
a. Existing studies on the 3-Strikes Laws
b. States with 3-Strikes laws and its impact on crime rates
c. 3-Strikes friends and foes identification
d. Media coverage (publications / agency / journalist / slant)

e. Summarize past legislative reform efforts
- Testimony for & against 3-strikes reform
DOING THE RESEARCH
- Using typical researcher skills and tools, do the research.
RESEARCH DISTRIBUTION
- Assure outreach organizers are trained on the information
- Produce analysis needed
- Produce or contribute to public education materials
COORDINATION WITH OTHERS
- Executive Director
- Campaign policy analyst
- Campaign organizers
PROCEDURE DEVELOPMENT / REVIEW
- Participate in the creation and maintenance of procedures that define the tasks delineated above
- Assure a backup person and / or replacement person for this role as needed
Necessary Qualifications:
• Research skills
• Effective interpersonal skills with people from a wide range of backgrounds
• Work well with Justice Works! team / group leaders
• Good understanding of the criminal justice reform details and “big picture”
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills
• Work well in a variety of environments
• Excellent understanding of / commitment to organizational philosophies and principles
Desired Qualifications:
• Prior experience with the criminal justice system
• Prior experience with Justice Works! philosophies, issues and activities
• Computer skills (Microsoft Word, Excel, and Access)
• Community connections
• Project management skills
• Experience working on issue campaigns
• Familiarity with Washington state politics
• Relationships with Washington media contacts
