Vote for a Change is Poverty Action's voter education and mobilization campaign. This year we will reach more people than ever before (over 30,000!) through a targeted phone and direct mail campaign. The 2008 Vote for a Change campaign will focus primarily on education, mobilization and leadership development with low-income, infrequent voters, in Spokane, Vancouver, and South King/North Pierce counties. We will help neighbors engage neighbors, hold candidates accountable, and ensure that people with low incomes engage in the election and weigh in on the issues that impact them. In order to reach 30,000 people in 4 areas across the state we will need hundreds of volunteers! Volunteer opportunities specific to this campaign begin NOW and continue through November 4th. How do I participate in this amazing campaign? Volunteer at our Candidate Forum in September (24th or 25th): We’ll ask candidates in our target areas to answer questions about the issues facing people with low incomes. Volunteering includes set-up, clean-up and other logistical help. Bird-dogger/Candidate tracker: We are looking for a volunteer to track candidate events and organize our members in the area to attend them. At these events/forums, the candidate tracker or members will ask questions about the candidates’ stances on issues of poverty. This gets candidates’ opinions out to the public and builds public pressure on candidates to address issues of poverty. Phone banking: Get Out the Vote (GOTV) phone banking requires the highest number of volunteers and is an ongoing activity. Every T, W, TH from the end of September through Election Day (11/4) we'll be calling 30,000 low-income, low-frequency voters, giving them information about ballot initiatives and identifying voters' key issues. Before September, we're looking for volunteers to help us call our members to recruit more volunteers for phone banking! Please contact us ASAP to find out how to participate in this end of phone banking. We provide the lists, the scripts and the phones and you provide your energetic phone skills. We usually host phone banks in the evenings, 5:30-8pm. Food and drinks always provided. Database Deity: As we register new voters, their information will need to be entered into our Voter Database. This database is used for our Get Out The Vote (GOTV) efforts, including phone banks and direct mail. We are looking for one or two volunteers to enter voter information as we make calls, talk to voters, and register voters in the community. Data entry will be ongoing, approximately once a week or once every two weeks throughout the campaign, starting in late July and early August. We look forward to working with you soon!
