Legal Information & Referral Phone Line Volunteer
Last updated on September 5, 2008
Logo

Every year over 6,000 women and men call the Legal Information & Referral Line (I&R) at the Northwest Women’s Law Center with legal questions. Volunteers at our I&R phone line respond to these calls and provide our callers with valuable legal information.

I&R Volunteers Provide Callers With:
• Information about Washington law, particularly in the areas of family law and discrimination
• Referrals to community agencies and private attorneys
• Assistance with problem-solving
• Self help materials

Benefits & Training:
The Law Center prepares volunteers by providing an orientation and on-the-job training on the phone line. Extensive written materials on a range of key legal topics are accessible to volunteers as they work with callers. These materials provide volunteers an opportunity to develop substantive knowledge of Washington law. Volunteers also benefit by practicing their client interviewing and client contact skills. Finally, many volunteers find this to be a rewarding way to use their skills to directly help others.

Eligibility: this position is open to Attorneys, law students and paralegals, or those who have completed or are currently enrolled in a legal training program, or have legal work experience.

Time Commitment:
I&R volunteers must commit to at least one 3½ hour shift per week for a minimum of 3 months. Shifts are available Monday-Friday from 9:00 A.M. to 12:30 and from 1:00 to 4:30 P.M. Evening shifts on Tues, Wed and some Thursdays are available from 5:30-7:30pm.
