PROGRAM INFORMATION: The Cultivating Youth program provides year-round youth gardening and nutrition education in Seattle Housing Authority (SHA) communities. During classes children have an opportunity to grow and eat fruits and vegetables fresh from community and school-yard gardens. Over the summer Acacia and Julie taught classes at several of our sites, though West Seattle Elementary was closed for repairs. This Spring we will be teaching daytime nutrition classes at West Seattle (formerly High Point) Elementary. We will be teaching after school classes at New Holly Vietnamese Friendship Association, Rainier Vista Youth Tutoring Program, First Place School, and John Muir Elementary. VOLUNTEER INFORMATION: Our program depends on volunteer support to provide youth with a well-rounded, structured learning experience. 10-30 students attend each class. The Cultivating Youth program strives for an adult to youth ratio of 1:4. VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES: Be a classroom helper! Join us for one of our weekly classes and assist with all aspects of our program (nutrition, cooking, and gardening) while building relationships with our students. We would prefer volunteers who can commit to the same class each week, but if that doesn’t fit your schedule let us know! There are lots of ways we can involve you into our classes. No gardening experience is necessary but a desire to work with children is a must. Check out our website for our current class schedule.
No gardening experience is necessary to work with the classes and after-school programs, but interest and love of children is a must! Also, we are always looking for people with unique skills in cooking, nutrition, gardening, composting, publishing, web-design, poetry, and art to come and share their knowledge with the children.
