Friends Foster Grandparent Program pays a tax-free stipend to income-qualified older adults to volunteer with children in a local school, childcare center or other youth-service organization in their own town.
Description:
As a volunteer you could earn a tax-free stipend that doesn't affect Social Security, housing subsidies or any local, state or federal benefits. Foster Grandparents love being appreciated as volunteers in a school or childcare center near their homes. If you love children, you will love making a "second home" in a room with babies or toddlers or kindergartners or elementary or middle school children. It's your choice. The program has lots of flexibility and is geared to serve the older adults who participate as well as the children who love them. Our volunteers have choices of locations, the age group of children they prefer and which days and hours they have free to lend their knowledge and experience. Teachers show our Foster Grandparents how to help the children in their classrooms and everyone benefits from this wonderful program!
History:
The Foster Grandparent Program has been sponsored by The Friends Program, a human services agency, since 1987. The Friends Program provides the Foster Grandparent Program in eight counties. The program is a part of the federal Senior Corps (see the Senior Corps website for more information). Please see www.friendsprogram.org for more.
