Volunteers provide mediation services after completing a 30-hour training program. Initially new volunteers are paired with a staff person or an experienced volunteer mediator. Usually volunteers work with only one mediation case at a time, meeting weekly or as appropriate to the needs of the participants for 1 to 4 sessions (average.) Mediators help the parties identify their priorities and try to make sure each has the opportunity to hear the other and be heard by them. Mediators facilitate a process to explore options and develop plans or solutions if appropriate. Successful mediators have good communication skills and are good listeners. They do not take sides and are able to give equal attention and interest to parties with opposite views, opinions and personalities. Mediators have good analytical thinking skills and allow the parties to find their own solution. The guiding principles of mediation are self-determination, confidentiality, and voluntary participation.
Volunteers must complete the basic mediation training before they can begin providing services. Training is scheduled when needed, usually not more than once a year. Applicants who would like to be notified when the next training is scheduled, please send in your email and US Mail address. Volunteers need to be flexible. Cases are assigned as they come in. This is more of an "on demand" commitment than a predictable schedule. You can refuse requests that do not fit your schedule and you can go away on vacations etc. so it is flexible in that direction too.
