The unofficial mission of the Scarborough Community Services Senior Program is to give all seniors an opportunity to maintain dignity, enrich their quality of living, and actively promote participation in all aspects of community life.

Senior Center Without Walls
In an effort to provide diverse programming for the seniors of Scarborough, Scarborough Community Services and community volunteers are developing a Senior Center Without Walls. The Senior Center Without Walls is a network of programs, services, and community partnerships. The Senior Center Without Walls works to meet the varying needs of the Scarborough senior population. The Senior Center Without Walls is a plan developed by the Senior Implementation Committee, and approved by Town Council. The Senior Center Without Walls includes the following components:
Scarborough Community Service is the central point of communication and administration for Senior Center Without Walls programs and partnerships. The Seniors Program Coordinator is housed in the Community Services office.
A Seniors Program Advisory Board is currently being formed, whose primary duties will be to review both programs being offered and the Seniors Program budget, and to offer directional advice to the Seniors Program Coordinator. The Seniors Program Advisory Board will be comprised of local community members, whose interests and past experiences will benefit the development of the Seniors Program. The Advisory Board will be appointed by Town Council.
At the same time, volunteer committees are being formed. These volunteer committees will be responsible for active research, planning, and implementation of programs and services. The Community Services Office will be the central point of administration, contact, and support for these volunteers.
In addition to typical committee responsibilities, volunteer responsibilities may also include (but are not limited to):
Meeting with potential partners; Site visits; Distributing flyers and other advertisement; Assisting with set-up and clean-up of regular activities and 1-time events; Staffing events; Pick-up and transportation of supplies/ materials
These types of jobs may involve driving in personal cars, and mileage reimbursement will be made available. Volunteers must keep record of miles driven and submit a Travel Expense Report for review by the Seniors Program Coordinator.
History:
In February of 2006, the Senior Services Study Committee was formed in an effort to further explore the needs and interests of seniors in Scarborough, and to research existing facilities and resources available for senior programming. This committee was made up of 17 members, representing all segments of the community. The Senior Services Study Committee and Community Services were responsible for hiring an outside agency, Critical Insights, to conduct a telephone survey of Scarborough seniors.
As a result of the survey, a five-year plan for developing senior programs for Scarborough was recommended. The plan included short-term and long-term goals. The short-term goals included hiring a Seniors Program Coordinator and developing a Senior Center Without Walls- a network of programs, services, and community partnerships to address senior needs. Nine focus areas were identified for developing a Senior Center Without Walls: activities, education, intergenerational, health and wellness, outreach, communications, funding, transportation, and facilities.
