Description:
Volunteer tax counselors assist people in preparing their tax returns and answer tax questions from Feb 1st to Apr 15th. Counselors receive annual training in both state and federal tax preparation in January and must pass an open book test. Counselors give a minimum of 4 hours per week at an AARP Tax-Aide site. Some counselors provide free electronic filing of state and federal returns as well. Limited shut-in service is available in some areas. Volunteers needed for publicity, technology and administrative positions as well.

History:
AARP Tax-Aide has provided this service for over 30 years and is affiliated with the Internal Revenue Service. In Maine over 12,000 people were assisted last year. Volunteers are needed throughout the state to replace and augment our existing volunteers. Previous tax experience is not necessary. Other positions for recruiting, publicity, technology and other areas are also needed.
