Virginia Tech created a new volunteer program called VT-ENGAGE to encourage volunteerism and enhance the relationship and partnership efforts between the university and the community.
United Way and VT-Engage are community partners in an effort to match volunteers with organizations needing volunteer help by utilizing an online system called Volunteer Solutions. You can use Volunteer Solutions to find volunteer opportunities and/or post the volunteer needs of your group.
Volunteers: We encourage you to register and complete a volunteer profile so you can receive email alerts about opportunities you would like. Click here to register.
Non-Profits: Register your group's volunteer and donation needs so you can receive email alerts about matches to help you. Agencies and organizations, click here to register.
VT-ENGAGE reaffirms Virginia Tech's commitment to service worldwide and helps people actively live out its motto, Ut Prosim, That I May Serve – established in 1896.
If you live outside the New River Valley area, simply enter the zip code of your community in the U.S. and opportunities listed closest to you will be listed.

Planting America Inc
| Last updated on October 24, 2008 |
We are a small grassroots project that aims to get 1,000,000 new trees planted by the end of August 2008. We are locally based out of Blacksburg, VA but have nationwide support and volunteers. For more information visit our website www.plantingamerica.org
Description:
It is the collective population that makes a small problem an epidemic, but it is the individuals of that society that can make the difference. After all, it is the actions of the citizens that define a country.
With that in mind, my friend and I, two college students from the middle of New Jersey , are taking the initiative to make America greener and healthier. In the summer of 2008, we will be biking across the country while planting one million trees along the way. Person by person and tree by tree, we hope that as we add to America 's beautiful landscape, we can also educate individuals whom we meet along the way and spread the seed of love for our environment. Furthermore, we will be making a documentary of our transcontinental journey to promote our message of environmental maintenance and awareness. Through the production and distribution of the film, we hope to spur discussion and inspire fellow citizens to help clean up and enhance the country. We are also making a strong effort to unite communities under the umbrella of Planting America. With our sub-project "Plant a tree for Planting America", people, communities and organizations can donate a tree they've planted to us and consequently, we'll put a picture of the event on our website and count it towards our goal of one million. We have already experienced success with communities joining to help us reach our goal. However ambitious this project may be, we will depend on sponsorship and support to make this possible. Whether it be a suggestion, a donation of any kind or general advice, we are reaching out to you for your help. Together, we can make this happen. As we progress in the planning and execution of our project, we keep in mind our ultimate goal. As a non-profit undertaking, our only benefits will be the result of the effort we put in. We'll only be as successful as the trees we plant, and the people we affect. We hope to hear from you and look forward to your help in planting America .
