Virginia Tech created a new volunteer program called VT-ENGAGE to encourage volunteerism and enhance the relationship and partnership efforts between the university and the community.

United Way and VT-Engage are community partners in an effort to match volunteers with organizations needing volunteer help by utilizing an online system called Volunteer Solutions.  You can use Volunteer Solutions to find volunteer opportunities and/or post the volunteer needs of your group.

Volunteers: We encourage you to register and complete a volunteer profile so you can receive email alerts about opportunities you would like. Click here to register.

New River Family Shelter

Last updated on February 6, 2008 New River Family Shelter provides safe, emergency shelter for families experiencing a housing crisis, and connects them with supportive services to promote and enhance their self-sufficency and stability. Description: Services New River Family Shelter(NRFS)provides include: Temporary shelter in one of our established shelter spaces. We currently have a two family house in Blacksburg,a single-family home in Blacksburg, a single-family mobile home in Christiansburg and two single family efficiency rooms in the Christiansburg/Shawsville area. We provide case management for shelter residents, and families are expected to be actively working on their goals in order to maintain further residence. -If we are unable to provide shelter due to the lack of available space or shelter requirements, we will provide a bus ticket or gas voucher to the nearest available shelter. -Information and referral to local programs which provide services such as food and clothing assistance, employment and job training assistance, medical care and counseling services.
