Whitfield-Murray Historical Society, housed at the beautiful Crown Gardens and Archives building at 715 Chattanooga Avenue in Dalton, seeks to preserve and document the history of Whitfield and Murray County, Georgia. The historical society owns several historic properties, including Hamilton House, the oldest brick home in Dalton; Blunt House, built by Dalton's first mayor and postmaster; Dug Gap Battle Park, a historic Civil War site, in Dalton; Chatsworth Depot; and the historic Wright Hotel in Chatsworth. It also maintains the Spring Place Methodist Church Musem. The historical society works with other community groups and agencies to assist in preserving other historic properties, as well. In addition to historic properties, the historical society maintains a library of photographs, maps and books on county and family history. We rely on the support and volunteerism of community members like you!

History:
Whitfield-Murray Historical Society was originally formed in the 1950's, lead by Dicksie Bandy, to save the Chief Vann House in Spring Place, which had fallen into disrepair. After purchasing the property and turning it over to the state, the historical society disbanded. In the 1970's, amid celebrations of the nation's bicentennial, the historical society, lead by Marion "Pete" Sims, was again organized as a non-profit organization, headquartered at Crown Gardens and Archives, and dedicated to preserving the rich heritage of Whitfield and Murray County.
