A not-for-profit, community-based organization whose goal is to ensure that pregnant women, infants, and their families receive adequate health care services in Bay, Franklin, and Gulf Counties.
Description:
The Healthy Start Coalition program includes: Education with the three Counties served about the importance of health care for moms and babies, Assessments conducted through Prenatal and Postnatal (Infant) Screens to assess the health of the mom and the baby to determine what services are needed and Collaboration with Community Partners to ensure complete services are received. Programs such as "Project Moses" are initiated to assist with un-met needs. For example, if a mom has no place for the baby to sleep we can provide a "basket/bassinet."
History:
Healthy Start began as a State Legislated Program in 1991. There are currently 31 Coalitions in the State of Florida. The Coalition is funded by the Department of Health. The main goal is to educate the community on the best possible prenatal care in order to have the healthiest baby. This in turn will decrease the amount of Medicaid dollars that are utilized to treat ill newborns. "Today's Healthy Babies are tomorrows Healthy Adults."
