The mission of the Des Moines Parks Department is to provide safe, clean, and beautiful facilities, parks and open spaces, along with professionally managed leisure activities for all people. Services shall be provided to enrich the quality of life for local citizens and to provide economic value through facilities which create tourism and encourage long-term community stability and growth.

Description:
The City of Des Moines Park and Recreation Department is a diverse agency offering a wide variety of experiences. The department oversees 70 parks, 2 golf courses, 5 swimming pools/aquatic centers, a soccer and ball diamond complex, greenhouses, 4 cemeteries, a marina, and 3 community centers. Along with the facilities, the parks department also provides youth and adult programming to be responsive to the needs of citizens and enhance their quality of life. The parks department works closely with the neighborhoods in identifying their needs within the neighborhood parks and green spaces.

Volunteers have become an integral part of the park system and bring creativity and vitality to our organization. Whether it is building and monitoring bird houses, helping at our concert series, planting and maintaining flower beds, or cleaning up a creek. These efforts enhance our parks but also, helps citizens give back to the community, meet new people, learn new skills, and make Des Moines a better place to live.
