The purpose of The ALS Association, Iowa Chapter is to assist Iowans affected by ALS (a.k.a. Lou Gehrig's Disease) until we find a cure.
Description:
The ALS Association, Iowa Chapter is a 501 (c)(3) not-for-profit health organization solely dedicated to the fight against ALS. We provide services for individuals and families affected by ALS. We raise funds through events and various donation opportunities. We educate the public and healthcare providers about ALS-related topics and issues. We advocate on behalf of individuals and families affected by ALS through state and national public policy efforts. We are committed to the search for treatments and a cure for ALS.
History:
The ALS Association, Iowa Chapter became an official Chapter of The ALS Association in October 2003. Prior to becoming a Chapter of The ALS Association, the organization existed as The Doug Hawley ALS Foundation, which was started by a group who had a close friend diagnosed with ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis) in 2000. There was a great need to partner with a National organization who served as the leader in ALS research, services, education, and advocacy. The ALS Association is the only national not-for-profit health organization dedicated solely to the fight against ALS.
