The American Heart Association is a national voluntary health agency whose mission is to reduce disability and death from cardiovascular diseases and stroke.

Description:
Since 1924 the American Heart Association has helped protect all ages and ethnicities from the ravages of heart disease and stroke. These diseases, the nation's number 1 and number 3 killers, claim more than 930,000 American lives a year. The association invested more than $407 million in fiscal year 2002-2003 for research, professional and public education service programs, and advocacy efforts. We are at work in your community building healthier hearts and lives. Our goal is to reduce coronary heart disease, stroke and risk by 25 percent by the year 2010.

History:
The American Heart Association is the largest voluntary health organization working to prevent, treat and defeat heart disease, stroke and other cardiovascular diseases. These diseases devastate millions of people of all ages and kill more than 930,000 Americans each year. To fight them the association supports research, education and advocacy and helps heart disease and stroke patients. Research we've funded has led to such major advances as CPR, pacemakers, bypass surgery and clot-busting drugs. Each year we train more than 9 million emergency medical services personnel, healthcare professionals and citizens in Emergency Cardiovascular Care. Over 22.5 million association volunteers and supporters are at work in their communities helping their friends, neighbors and loved ones live longer, better lives.
