Children and Family Urban Ministries (CFUM) addresses the concerns and builds on the strengths of those living on the near north side of Des Moines. Special emphasis is given to school-age children, youth and their families.

Description:
The Breakfast Club - A year-round before school program for children Pre-K through 8th grade. We provide a meal and a safe nurturing environment for children whose parents must be at work before school opens. Assistance is needed in serving breakfast and interacting with children. The Breakfast Club celebrates its 40th Anniversary in 2008!

The Haven and Haven, Too - A year-round after school program for children kindergarten - 8th grade. Academic support, creative self expression and recreation are the core experiences of the program.

The Supper Club provides an evening meal six days a week, Monday - Saturday, serving adults and children. The meal is primarily provided by local congregations and faithful volunteers.

School Break Programs - All day programming is offered to children during the fall, spring and summer breaks. The children we serve attend Moulton Extended Learning Center which has a year-round calendar, so the children have additional weeks off of school during the fall and spring. Volunteers are needed to assist during these special weeks.

The WILD Girls, Wonder Girls, and Backyard Boys - Gender specific programs for girls and boys in upper elementary and middle school. The weekly programs are designed to encourage healthy self-development and community involvement in that critical transition time.

Our Back to School Health Fair in July, Thanksgiving and Christmas Dinners and Christmas gifting program offer a variety of additional volunteer opportunities.

History:
Children and Family Urban Ministries is a non-profit organization that was incorporated in 1992, but some programs pre-date that incorporation. The Breakfast Club began in 1968 and The Supper Club began in 1987. The Haven, our after school program, began in 2000. Most recently we began offering the gender-specific programs. We continue to grow and add programs to help meet the needs of the children and families we serve.
