To promote animal welfare, the human animal bond, and prevent the overpopulation of dogs and cats.

Description:
The ARL, which serves animals from across the state of Iowa, depends on private funds to provide services such as animal adoption; humane education; animal assisted therapy; pet behavior counseling and training; resident pets; and animal abuse intervention and prevention.

These programs, together with the ARL's spaying and neutering program, work to reduce the number of homeless pets in Iowa. The ARL also works on legislative efforts, state and federal, to pass laws that improve the lives of all animals.

The ARL is the Des Moines area's only shelter that never turns away an animal in need.

History:
The Animal Rescue League of Iowa is a nonprofit organization founded in 1926 dedicated to the welfare of animals. The ARL is Iowa's largest animal shelter, caring for over 14,000 homeless, lost, abandoned and injured animals each year.
