Less than half of kindergarten-age children are read to by families on a daily basis. Reading to young children is proven to improve their vocabulary skills. Studies show that children from low income families enter kindergarten with a listening vocabulary of 3,000 words while a child of a middle income family enters with a vocabulary of 20,000 words.
