The Mariners' Museum
[ View Opportunities ]
Last updated on October 2, 2007

The Mariners' Museum connects the world today with America’s seafaring heritage. Set amid a scenic lake and nature park, America's National Maritime Museum
engages and enriches the collective mind and imagination of the global community through research, preservation, and interpretation of international collections.

Description:
The Mariners' Museum consists of an array of galleries dedicated to unfolding the historical and scientific narrative of humanity's attachment to the sea. These stories are revealed by the artifacts that are carefully acquired and conserved by museum staff for the purposes of deepening visitors' understanding of the sea. The Mariners' Museum also is associated with its own library and park, both of which serve to make the setting a cultural resource for the Tidewater area.

History:
The Mariners' Museum was founded in 1930 by Archer M. Huntington for the purpose of helping local residents deepen their understanding of the water-based region in which they live and appreciate humanity's long-standing connection to the sea. Throughout the years, it has grown from its initial collection of ship models, figureheads and other nautical items to a world-renowned maritime museum whose collection includes hundreds of thousands of photographs, priceless art, a broad array of navigational instruments, small craft and major artifacts from the USS Monitor warship. The Mariners' Museum has been proclaimed America's National Maritime Museum by the US Congress.
