First Night's mission is to build community by broadening and deepening the community's appreciation of the visual and performing arts through an innovative, diverse, and high quality New Year's Eve program, which offers the community a shared cultural experience that is accessible and affordable to all.
Description:
The First Night Williamsburg Inc. all-volunteer Board of Directors works throughout the year to provide this family-friendly, non-alcoholic celebration. The variety of entertainment appeals to all ages and tastes. With sixty-seven acts in Williamsburg's beautiful churches, schools, public buildings, and the College of William & Mary campus, over 300 volunteers are required in order to bring families and the community together for this positive, festive event. Anyone volunteering for two hours before or on the evening of the celebration receives free admission to the entire event.
History:
First Night International is the umbrella organization and it licenses the First Night name and provides guidance and technical support. An article advancing the idea of a First Night celebration in Williamsburg appeared in a Virginia Gazette article in March of 1993. Two months later a board and committees were formed and First Night Williamsburg was incorporated on May 19, 1993. The Williamsburg community has had a First Night celebration every New Year's Eve since.
