NAMI-WA is dedicated to improving the quality of life and assisting in the recovery of persons with serious mental illnesses so that they may attain their highest potential of functioning to satisfy their fundamental needs.
Description:
We work to accomplish our goal through providing support groups (one for consumers and one for family members) and education on mental illnesses for consumers (Peer to Peer Training), their families (Family to Family Classes) and the public (In Our Own Voice: Living with Mental Illness), as well as frequent suppers to provide socialization opportunities for consumers. We advocate with our elected representatives for improvements to the mental health system. We participate in the NAMI-VA Walk to raise money and erase stigma, and also hold our own fund-raising walk every May on the grounds of Eastern State Hospital.
History:
Our all-volunteer, self-help organization was started 21 years ago by people having family members with serious mental illnesses. In recent years we have begun support groups, family educational classes, and public presentations at the library as well as various churches and civic groups. Recently we have begun even more activities on behalf of persons with mental illnesses, particularly classes for those in recovery as well as opportunities for socialization.
