History:
The American Cancer Society was founded in 1913 by 15 prominent physicians and business leaders in New York City. In those days, cancer was rarely mentioned in public and the Society's founders knew that public awareness had to be raised if progress was to be made. Our mission of eliminating cancer has not changed and today we have more than two million volunteers nationwide, making the Society one of the strongest and most effective voluntary health organizations in the world. Progress has been made - mortality rates for some cancers, breast, colon and prostate, are on the decline. People are living longer from cancer and, in some cases, are learning to live with their cancer. Volunteers play a vital role in fighting cancer, by conducting screening programs, acting as grassroots advocates, driving patients to treatments, or by raising funds through Daffodil Days or Relay for Life - and so much more.
