Our mission is education, support and advocacy for people living with mental health challenges and for their families. Our vision is for help, hope and healing for people living with mental illness. Our classes are backed by solid data that shows improved outcomes for people who participate. These are evidence-based practices. All of our services are provided at no charge.
Description:
We are a grassroots nonprofit dedicated to a vision of recovery and lives of resilience for individuals living with mental illness. We provide free classes, support groups, educational forums and support services for people affected by mental health challenges. In partnership with community law enforcement agencies and with county mental health, we strive for lives of dignity and respect for our constituents, without stigma or barriers. In addition to our educational classes and support groups, we offer art classes, a holiday gift program, a special needs fund, and assistance in procuring household furnishings. We have a small lending library of books, tapes, and dvd's on many aspects of mental health. We hold monthly public meetings with expert speakers, and periodically hold large events to further understanding of mental illness. We have a speakers' bureau of clients living with mental health challenges who would be proud to visit your workplace and share their lives.
History:
NAMI Sonoma County was formed in 1981. Originally, it was in a support group format for family members. Over the years it has grown to encompass structured classes and support groups for clients and their loved ones, as well as a wide array of support services. Now, as budget cuts affect a wide spectrum of mental health services, we believe that NAMI's role as a grassroots agency for resources and referrals is more important than ever.
