The mission of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society is to end the devastating effects of multiple sclerosis, a chronic, often disabling disease that attacks the central nervous system. Symptoms may be mild, such as numbness in the limbs, or severe, such as paralysis or loss of vision. Approximately 400,000 Americans acknowledge having MS, and every week about 200 people are diagnosed. MS affects women at two to three times the rate of men.

Description:
The Greater North Jersey Chapter serves Northern New Jersey in Bergen, Essex, Hudson, Morris, Passaic, Sussex, Union, and Warren counties. It provides over 100 programs and services to over 5,000 people with multiple sclerosis, their families, and caregivers -- all of whom are dealing daily with the physical and emotional challenges of the disease.

Programs include: crisis and short-term home health care; twenty self-help groups led by trained volunteer facilitators; therapeutic swim, yoga, tai chi, and exercise classes; physical and occupational therapy; advocacy; financial assistance for people in need of emergency medical/pharmaceutical assistance or medical equipment; educational seminars and conferences; information and referral; recreational activities for people with MS, their caregivers, and children; and much more.

History:
The National MS Society funds more MS research, offers more services for people with MS, and provides more professional education programs than any other MS organization in the world. Since its founding in 1946, and the first research grant was distributed in 1947, over $420 million dollars have been invested to find the cause and cure for MS.
