Description:
Arthur R. Marshall Loxahatchee National Wildlife Refuge serve as an outstanding showcase for ecosystem management that restores, protects, and enhances a portion of the unique northern Everglades biological community. The Refuge provides for the enjoyment and enhanced quality of life for present and future generations. In addition to being a home to wildlife, the refuge offers many recreational opportunities. Walking trails, a canoe trail, bike trail, boat ramps, fishing platform, observation towers, butterfly garden, and a visitor center are available to outdoor enthusiasts.
History:
The Arthur R. Marshall Loxahatchee National Wildlife Refuge was established on June 8, 1951, under the authority of the Migratory Bird Conservation Act of 1929, and through a license agreement between the Central & Southern Florida Flood Control District (now called the South Florida Water Management District) and the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service. In 1986, Congress renamed the refuge "Arthur R. Marshall Loxahatchee National Wildlife Refuge" to honor Arthur Raymond Marshall, Jr. (1919-1985) an influential conservationist in south Florida. The Arthur R. Marshall Loxahatchee National Wildlife Refuge is one of more than 520 refuges in the National Wildlife Refuge System. This system, with units in every state in the nation, is managed by the U. S. Fish & Wildlife Service, an agency of the Department of Interior. The entire refuge comprises about 221 square miles or 147,392 acres.
