The mission of the Health Care Ministry of Princeton is to assist the elderly to remain independent in their homes as long as that is safely possible.
Description: The HCM provides supportive services to the elderly within the Greater Princeton Community. These services include health- and medical-related transportation, food shopping, friendly visiting, and caregiver support. With only three part-time staff members, the HCM relies on volunteers to provide many direct services to clients as well as IT support and office work. Volunteers come from a very diverse group representing a wide range in age, localities, employment responsibilities and personal interests. The time commitment for volunteering is very flexible. Volunteer drivers provide rides when it fits their schedules. Food shoppers provide this service at a frequency that meets their needs, commonly every-other-week. Friendly visiting is essential to counteract the effects of loneliness and visits are scheduled at a mutually agreed upon frequency. The majority of clients are the frail elderly. They often are homebound and only leave their houses for necessary medical appointments. Volunteers receive a great deal of satisfaction by knowing they are making a difference in the lives of the elderly.
History: The Health Care Ministry was founded in 1984 in response to the need of the elderly population in Princeton for supportive services that would enable them to remain in their homes and avoid placement in nursing homes. Since then, we have expanded the geographic area served to included the communities that border Princeton. The types of services provided have been expanded to include help for family caregivers.
