The mission of the Cocheco Valley Humane Society is to create a better world for animals by providing shelter, educating the community about human care and treatment, advocating animal welfare and enriching lives through the human-animal bond.
Description:
As an animal shelter, CVHS provides a safe and caring temporary residence for homeless, lost, abandoned, or unwanted dogs, cats, and small animals. Staff and volunteers work side-by-side, meeting the needs of nearly 3,000 animals per year. We are a holding facility for stray and lost animals that are brought in by animal control officers, as well as the general public. We offer many community services, and are committed to placing animals in caring and supportive new homes.
History:
Established in 1984, Cocheco Valley Humane Society is a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting humane treatment of animals and ending their suffering. Since its' establishment, CVHS has been focused on a high quality of care for animals in need of shelter and care.

Overall Experience
From walking dogs to office work to planning/staffing special events, the opportunities are priceless.

I started out walking dogs; the exercise & socializaton helps them til they can find a forever home. When my schedule no longer allowed for that, I began working on special events -- off-site adoptions, rabies clinics, craft fair, walk-a-doggie thon, the list goes on. I've met a lot of great people, and a lot of great animals I never would have otherwise; I've always gone home feeling good about my experiences, and with a renewed appreciation for what CVHS and other organizations like them do, day in and day out. The staff and the other volunteers I've worked with are an extremely dedicated, caring group of people.
When I get home I always give a special hug to my own pets. Volunteering for an animal shelter makes me appreciate them even more. posted by donnabeaudoin on July 12, 2003 |
