Provides emergency shelter and support services to victims of domestic violence regardless of age, color, creed, sex, religion or national origin.
Description:
Emergency Shelter provides shelter and services to women and children who are victims of domestic violence. Outreach services provides targeted education, support groups and case management services.
History:
The opening of AVDA’s doors 20 years ago was the result of community collaboration. In 1984, a group of Palm Beach County women met to discuss the need for a south county emergency shelter for adults and children who are victims of domestic violence. The plan for a shelter, named Aid to Victims of Domestic Assault, (AVDA), was created. Through diligent efforts, the group raised $250,000 to match a $250,000 grant from the Department of Housing and Urban Development to purchase and renovate a two-story, stucco former residential home built in 1953 to serve as the shelter. Casa Vegso, AVDA’s emergency shelter, recently expanded to include transitional housing. This much needed addition increased AVDA’s residential capacity from 25 to 71 individuals at one time. While residing at Casa Vegso’s transitional housing, women and their children may stay up to two years as they begin to rebuild their lives and economic stability. In the first year of operation, Casa Vegso’s transitional housing served 12 women and 18 children. AVDA changed its corporate name from Aid to Victims of Domestic Assault, Inc. to Aid to Victims of Domestic Abuse, Inc. on September 23, 1998, to better communicate to the community the nature of the services provided by the organization. AVDA’s mission reflects the dedication of the organization to building a “Community of Hope” as they empower victims of domestic abuse to live their lives independently and free of fear.
