Our mission is to help members of our community become stewards of the environment. We want every volunteer to know that they're making a positive difference in our environment, having fun, making new friends, and staying connected to an organization that is making a difference...today and in the future. We encourage you to volunteer to plant trees, harvest cypress seeds or help with administration.
Description:
Our overall mission is to restore the Florida Everglades by planting wetland trees. Since our founding in 1998, we have planted over 71,000 native cypress and pond apple trees in wetland areas, awarded over $150,000 in scholarships and internships, and involved more than 4,000 volunteers in hands-on restoration projects. In the past 100 years, the Florida Everglades has shrunk by more than half, and the remaining portion faces daily threats from problems with water quanity, quality and distribution. The Everglades is not just a natural wonder and unique habitat for thousands of species of plants, animals, fish, reptiles and insects, it is a vital and one-of-a-kind wetland that plays a key role in providing drinking water to South Florida residents. It is imperitive that this ecosystem be protected. We aim to restore the forested wetlands that were once a large part of the Everglades ecosystem, and protect the remaining Everglades by educating children and the public about its overall importance.
History:
Our originator, Arthur R. Marshall (1913-1985) was a leading figure in virtually every public issue that had to do with preserving the natural systems of Florida for over 30 years. Marjory Stoneman Douglas, nationally recognized as the first lady of conservation, planted the original seeds of this organization in 1982 when she made the first donation to her friend and associate, Art Marshall. The Foundation was officially founded in 1998 by John Arthur Marshall, nephew of Art Marshall.
