The American Red Cross, a humanitarian organization led by volunteers and guided by its congressional charter and the fundamental principles of the International Red Cross Movement, will provide relief to victims of disasters and help people prevent, prepare for, and respond to emergencies.
Description:
House fires, hurricanes, and floods are all disasters that the American Red Cross responds to more than 67,000 times a year, many or which never even make the news. Our responders, nearly all volunteers, meet victims' immediate needs by providing food, clothing, shelter and emotional support. Hundreds of U.S. service men and women turn to our Armed Forces Emergency Services (AFES) every day for emergency communication with families, confidential counseling and other social services. Lifesaving Red Cross training prepares you to face everyday disasters such as choking, heart attacks, and drownings. Your Red Cross is there for families during disasters, large and small, for as long as their needs exist. Your RED CROSS---among the first to arrive, among the last to leave.
History:
Since 1917, the Palm Beach County Chapter of the American Red Cross has been providing shelter for families during a hurricane, flood or fire and teaching First Aid, CPR, Aids Prevention and Water Safety. The local Chapter boasts more than 2,000 registered volunteers, including 250 youth volunteers, serving a four county service area. Each year, the Chapter provides to the community; Armed Forces Emergency Services, International Tracing Services, Disaster Relief Services, and Health & Safety Education.

Overall Experience
Incredibly awesome and rewarding We wanted to give but we got the gift

My husband & I came from VA on our own to help w/hurricane victims. Worked at Gaines Center for week. Worked family services & damage assessment.
I gained better understanding of the Red Cross workings & how much they make a difference. We cam back and joined Chapter here in Roanoke and are signed up for classes. You all are awesome!! Thanks for letting us help. posted by Minnix on November 1, 2004 |
