The mission of Palm Beach Zoo is to responsibly demonstrate its commitment to excellence in wildlife research and conservation by rescue, rehabilitation and propagation.

Description:
The Palm Beach Zoo is a non-profit 501c3 educational organization that has served South Florida since 1969. Our 23-acre, AZA accredited institution features a primarily Neotropical collection and is open to the public 364 days a year. The zoo's mission is to promote education and conservation in a fun and recreational environment and volunteers are vital to spreading the wildlife conservation message to more than 233,000 annual visitors. Last year the volunteers at the Palm Beach Zoo gave over 11,000 hours of dedicated volunteer service to the Palm Beach County community.

History:
In the 1950's, the city of West Palm Beach, at the urging of Paul Dreher, director of the city's Parks and Recreation Department, began development of a botanical garden. On what was then 23 acres of swampland, Mr. Dreher envisioned a zoo and a place where children could come to play. With his own money, Mr. Dreher started a small barnyard collection of two ducks, two chickens, a goose, and a goat. In 1969 a group of interested citizens filed for non-profit status as the Zoological Society of the Palm Beaches, founded to promote excellence in education, recreation, conservation and research. Today, the Zoo is a 23-acre facility with more than 500 animals, including some of the world's most endangered. The Palm Beach Zoo is proud to be one of the few zoos in America which can provide their animals with outdoor housing year-round.
