The mission of NAMI DuPage is to provide support, advocacy and education in order to improve the quality of life of individuals with mental illness and their families.
Description:
NAMI DuPage is a 501(c)3 grassroots mental health organization, dedicated to improving the lives of persons with mental illness and their families. One of over 1100 affiliates of NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illness) and the largest of 41 in Illinois, NAMI DuPage was started in 1985 by a group of families struggling to find resources, treatment and support for their ill family members.
Studies show that the best outcomes for individuals with a mental illness result from the involvement of family members. NAMI programs and services help people with mental illness and their families in their path to recovery.
NAMI DuPage is a member-based organization with a membership of over 600 people. For the first fifteen years, programs were run entirely by volunteers. Over the past 23 years, NAMI DuPage has developed the ability to maximize resources in order to deliver quality programs and services that work to further our mission. In 2007, our programs reached over 6,000 individuals. We have developed community partnerships with the Mental Health Criminal Court, churches in DuPage County, schools, police departments, the DuPage County Health Department, hospitals and colleges in order to reach a broad base of individuals within our community. Now, staff led by an Executive Director, are actively working with volunteers to expand programs.
History:
NAMI was founded by a group of family members who had a child with a mental illness but found few services for their children. They thought by joining together that they could find more help for their children. In fact by joining together and forming a strong grassroots organization NAMI has made a difference in the lives of individuals with a mental illness and their families.
