The Neal Smith National Wildlife Refuge (NWR) is part of the National Wildlife Refuge System whose mission is to administer a federal network of lands and waters for the conservation, management and where appropriate, restoration of the fish, wildlife and plant resources and their habitats within the United States for the benefit of present and future generations of Americans.

History:
The Neal Smith NWR was established by Congress in 1990 to restore native tallgrass prairie, wetland, and savanna habitats; serve as a major environmental education center providing opportunities for study; provide wildlife dependent recreation; and provide assistance to local landowner to improve their lands for wildlife habitat.
