The Lupus Foundation of America is the nation's leading nonprofit voluntary health organization dedicated to finding the cause of and cure for lupus and providing support and services to all people affected by lupus.

Description:
The Lupus Foundation of America, Indiana Chapter dedicates itself to providing education and support services to people with lupus, their families and friends, and the community about the disease. The Chapter offers free educational material, support group meetings and seminars in an effort to reach people and to help them find a way of living with lupus. Our goal is to increase lupus awareness by setting up displays, providing physician offices, health care providers, libraries and other public access locations with lupus magazines and information. The chapter maintains six support groups in East Chicago, Hammond, Gary, Merrillville, Valparaiso and Portage. At least one public education seminar is held annually in Northwest Indiana. The chapter has participated in 35 health fairs to distribute lupus information. The chapter holds three fundraisers annually; Chili Cook-off Contest, Strike Out Lupus and Walk for Lupus Now. Currently, there is a Poker Run being planned for September 1, 2007 and a Luau at Govert Auto Body Shop in Merrillville on September 8, 2007.

History:
The Indiana Chapter became a constituent chapter of the Lupus Foundation of America in October 1987 with 35 members serving 14 counties in Northwest Indiana. In 2005, the Lupus Foundation of America requested that the Chapter provide services to the 92 counties in Indiana. The chapter participates in health fairs to increase awareness of lupus for the signs and symptoms of the disease for early diagnosis and treatment. Although the chapter has annual fundraisers; Chili Cook-off Contest, Strike Out Lupus, and Lupus Walk for a Cure, there are other events that increase awareness of lupus, such as the Stay at Home Tea.
