The mission of Meals on Wheels is to improve the quality of life and the nutritional health of persons in need by preparing and delivering meals utilizing community volunteers.
Description:
Meals on Wheels (MOW) provides home-delivered meals to elderly, ill and disabled clients throughout Lake County. In addition, MOW provides meals to Porter County's Meals on Wheels program, as well as to child and adult daycare facilities. In 2006, we prepared a total of 298,508 meals! More than 700 volunteers help support our mission in a variety of ways, and we still need lots more! Their primary role is delivering meals to clients' homes. Volunteers serve as our greatest assets, as they not only deliver meals but also friendly smiles and a daily check on the health and well-being of our clients.
Our program provides reassurance to thousands of families because MOW allows clients to maintain their health and independence by staying in their own home and by potentially prolonging placement in a long-term facility. Facing a critical shortage of volunteers, Meals on Wheels needs you! For the cost of your next specialty coffee, you can donate a gallon of gas to bring joy to 16 homebound clients. Invest a little more and you can pick up your coffee on the way! Enjoy flexible scheduling, while you feel great helping others.
History:
Meals on Wheels began service in 1977 in southern Lake County as part of the Visiting Nurse Association. At that time, meals were obtained from hospitals and nursing homes. As our program continued to grow, it was necessary to open a central kitchen in 1993, at which time we purchased a building in Crown Point to prepare meals in-house. We outgrew that facility in 2002 when our meal count numbers grew to over 1,200 meals daily for clients living throughout Lake County. We also added support to Porter County, as well as to child and adult daycares along the way. After receiving a donation of land from Dean White, Meals on Wheels embarked on a $2.4 million dollar capital campaign in 2004 to build a new facility in Merrillville. In July of 2006, construction of the new 12,000 sq.ft. nutrition center was completed, and operations were moved without interruption to meal delivery.
