The Compassionate Friends (TCF)is a self-help organization offering friendship and understanding to bereaved parents, grandparents, and siblings. The primary purpose of TCF is to assist parents in the positive resolution of the grief experience and to support their efforts to achieve physical and emotional health after the loss of a child/children.
Description:
The Compassionate Friends will be offering training on how to raise butterflies for a mass release during our upcoming Celebration of Life "Walk to Remember" event. If you or your organization is interested in volunteering for this project please contact carolcastaneda@sbcglobal.net for more information.
If you have experienced the loss of a child, grandchild, or sibling or know someone who is grieving this type of loss we encourage you to consider joining our support group so that you may find hope and healing through the sharing process.
Our Lake County meetings are held from 7pm - 9pm on the 3rd Tuesday of each month at the First Presbyterian Church located in Crown Point, IN.
Our Porter County meetings are held from 7pm - 9pm on the 1st Thursday of each month at Our Lady of Sorrow Church located in Valparaiso, IN.

History:
The Compassionate Friends was founded in Coventry, England by Rev. Simon Stephens in 1969. Rev. Stephens was the assistant to the chaplain in the Coventry and Warshire Hospital. Many children died each year in the hospital as a result of accidents and illness. The Rev. brought a couple of grieving parents together and worked with them in establishing an organization that could offer understanding, friendship,support and care to other bereaved parents. The Compassionate Friends grew throughout the United Kingdom, and established the first chapter in the United Sates in Miami Florida in 1972. Since then, over 650 chapters have been established throughout the United States and in more than 30 countries throughout the world. The Lake&Porter County Chapter of TCF was founded by Chris McDonald in 1977 after the death of her new born.

The Compassionate Friends help bereaved parents, grandparents, and siblings through their grief by acknowegement, acceptance, and compassion. We acknowlege that life will never be the same after the loss of a child/sibling. We accept that there is no way to fix the pain, but talking to other parents/siblings who have experienced the same loss helps the bereaved parent/sibling know that someone really understands, will be there to support them, cares, and wants to help.
