Sickle cell disease is an inherited abnormality of the hemoglobin of the red cells. It is characterized by anemia, stroke, damage to major organs and early death. it affects one in every 500 African Americans. Our mission is to improve the lives of families and individuals affected by sickle cell disease, ant to inform and educate the public.
Description:
The Sickle Cell Disease Association offers a wide range of programs and services to residents of Northwest Indiana. These services include, Public Awareness & Education, designed to make the public more educated in the prevention and the treatment of sickle cell disease. Chronic disease, designed to detect early, prior to the appearance of symptoms. Maternal and Child Health, (Newborns), designed to offer follow-up services to those infants found positive through the Indiana State Dept of Health's newborn screening program. and Counseling, designed to explain the test results, and when necessary work within the family unit to resolve any emotional problems as the result of a sickle cell disorder.
History:
The agency was founded in 1971 as a non-profit organization to provide free Sickle Cell services and three years of care coordination for children with special health needs. We have also established a parents auxiliary designed of offer families an avenue to obtain support, as well as donating their time as volunteers for the two major fund raisers we hold each year.
