Porter County Aging & Community Services, Inc. serves the needs of the aging and aged, disabled and/or low-income residents of Porter County, through investigation of problems, research and planning, public education, fundraising, cooperation and coordination with the Indiana Department of Family and Community Services, the Area 1 Agency on Aging, and with all appropriate agencies and organizations within Porter County.

Description:
PCACS provides a relatively low cost demand response transportation service for the citizens of Porter County. These services are door to door, meaning clients can be picked up at their homes, dropped off at their desired destination and returned to their homes. Over eighty percent of riders are senior citizens and the disabled. These transportation services are often the direct link between this population and the ability to be healthy, independent and productive citizens.

As participants in the Senior Nutrition Program, Porter County Aging & Community Services provides a nutritional meal, along with socialization, exercise and wellness training at three nutrition sites in Porter County: Friendship Activity Center, Duneland Activity Center, and the Hebron Activity Center.

PCACS also offers an emergency response system (Lifeline) to the elderly and disabled. The lifeline unit provides reassurance and peace of mind to the subscribers and their families that help is available on a 24-hour basis. PCACS administers several Energy Assistance Programs including EAP, Winter Warmth, Gift of Warmth, FEMA, and Weatherization. Through the Energy Assistance Program, low-income households are assisted with winter heating expenses and summer cooling expenses. This program helps those in need avoid service disconnection, reconnection fees and deposits. PCACS also administers the Section 8 Housing Program for Porter County. This program allows low-income families to acquire adequate housing. Finally, PCACS provides information and referral services that are available to all Porter County residents.

History:
Porter County Aging & Community Services (PCACS) was first established, in 1953, as the Porter County Council on Aging and Aged. It is one of the oldest social service agencies in Porter County. In 1973, PCACS incorporated as a Not For Profit and was one of the first local agencies to join the United Way of Porter County. Over time, the agency's name changed to reflect its broader mission. While PCACS is the sole representative of the national system of Area Agencies on Aging in Porter County, it takes an array of federal, state and local funds to support the agency's mission.
